This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.
For twelve years, Zeke Honeycutt has been waiting for his father to be executed on death row.
Haunted by the crime he witnessed as a child, he has been scraping together a living to raise his brother, Will—now fifteen years old—ever since they left foster care. Unlike Zeke, Will, an oddball budding filmmaker, was too young to remember their parents, and to him their mother’s murder is just a case file. Nonetheless, Zeke takes his brother on a road trip across the eight-hundred and seventy-two miles that stretch between LA and the Eyman Prison complex in Arizona to view the execution. As they drive through the desert in their beat-up car, they keep up a steady banter about the mundane—school, girls, and everything in between. But as they move closer to their destination, each must confront the family history that left an indelible imprint on their lives.
Vivid and surprisingly funny, Twelve Years, Eight-Hundred and Seventy-Two Miles speaks to the irrelevancy of recovery once the worst has been survived.

This is an impressive example of what a character-led story should be. The story tells of two brothers on a journey that is sad, happy, and interesting. I became engrossed with the characters as the story evolved. With each page, the brothers became more flushed out, multidimensional, and real. By the end, I felt myself truly rooting and caring for the them. In addition to the impressive character development, the backdrop and storytelling was done beautifully. The author did a great job at balancing character/story details and leaving the reader's imagination to fill in the pieces. A great read.Product details

Twelve Years Eighthundred and Seventytwo Miles A Short Story edition by Vera Kurian Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I am impressed with how well the characters are developed, especially for a relatively short story. A great read that I didn't want to end.
Really touching story. I think everyone has had a road trip they never wanted to take, but had to and this story captures the tension and relief of that experience quite well.
A touching story about brotherly love, family trauma, and closure. What I liked most was the hysterical banter between the two lead characters, and how it masked their deeper feelings and anxieties. Really well imagined and executed. Highly recommend.
Kurian has created a thoughtful story about family trauma, courage, and the bond between brothers. The characters are well-developed and I appreciated her sense of humor. Excellent work!
I was skeptical when I saw 100% 5-star reviews. I'm not skeptical anymore.
Wonderfully written story with very compelling characters. Taking a ride alongside these brothers, we can really sense their struggle and strong commitment to each other. A success!
What a fantastic story. These two brothers feel so real, and the writing shows a sharp sense of humor, even though it's no comedy. It's a compelling and very moving read, with uncommonly sympathetic characters in a story with a great big heart. A triumph.
